Seneca was a Roman politician, philosopher and orator. His books bring him closer to the Stoic philosophy, he wrote About the Brevity of Life, Moral Treaties, About Happiness, Tragedies, About Providence.
It is interesting to note that he had no influence on the scholastic philosophy of the Middle Ages, that is, on Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas, but Aristotle and Plato did. He is a contemporary of Saint Paul and Saint Peter, apostles. There is no reference if Seneca knew the Christianism, Seneca lived in the first century after Christ.
Many phrases of Seneca are famous. Seneca reflects about Perseverance and Wisdom and he is credited with the famous phrase: "Persevere and you will succeed."
Perseverance is the daily determination to do good avoiding evil. Its main characteristic is the resistance. Perseverance from ancient times is considered a divine and perfect virtue.
Scholasticism takes up the concept of perfect virtue and considers the perseverance as a spiritual gift, that is, a perfection which origine is God. Accompany the eternal life, that is, the knowledge of God, the constancy and the security in God.
Talk about Perseverance is talk about determination, know what you want.
To understand this affirmation we should think what happens when we do not persevere. With no determination and constancy any victory is possible.
The volatile and unstable people have great difficulty in achieving their goals.
There are many occasions where the more determined triumphs. Do not yield to the difficulties and setbacks. Know how to wait. When we trust ourselves we persevere. Perseverance involves leadership, self-confidence and discernment.
Discernment is to differentiate right from wrong, the false from the true. Leadership to know the way and the vision.
Perseverance is to lead, which Persevere is a guide to others and is a source of inspiration. We need perseverance.
