Bible wisdom: The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short. Proverbs 10:27
We see an example of this teaching about the gift of longevity (Immortality) in the Bible clearly in the book of Genesis. At the beginning of humanity, the first human beings lived long, God granted them immortality, Noah and Methuselah lived about 900 years. But the Bible tells us that as a consequence of the increase of sin in humanity, the days of man were shortened: "Then the LORD said, ´My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years" Genesis 6:3. Longevity is a blessing from God.
The book of proverbs puts us on opposite paths to the sinner and the righteous, for the former a short and troubled life, for the latter a long and quiet life: "The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short" Proverbs 10:27.
And this is obviously logical, the spiritual life of man begins with the fear of the Lord; this spiritual gift is defined as constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, and stability. Those who cultivate this spiritual gift seek wisdom and inner peace in all things, do not get carried away by passions and avoid fights, error, and problems; about wisdom the bible says: "Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed" Proverbs 3:15-19.
On the other hand, in sinners, due to their destructive, chaotic, and vertiginous lifestyle, we see all kinds of excesses, drinking, eating, and lust. These are the famous deadly sins of Thomas Aquinas. Clearly, health is far from sinners. And not only this, when the neighbor does not matter, and greed and fear condition our social life, competing for scarce resources such as fame, power and money, a life of this style subjects the body to great psychophysical wear because of the demand to see ourselves always well, and controlling those around us, makes us to work first badly and then too much.
