The depth of the love of Jesus: And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. 1 John 4:17
Jesus teaches us that in the fullness of love, the love of charity, the love perfected by the nature of the good, is the likeness to the perfection of God: "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" Matthew 5:48. Jesus is explaining to us that the love of the adult person comes from wisdom, God because he is wise loves with mercy, wisdom is prior to love because to love something you have to know it first, and wisdom is the knowledge of God.
When we live with wisdom, learning to make the right decisions in life, and avoiding mistakes, we are living according to the will of God and therefore in his love and likeness, as explained by the apostle John in his first epistle: "And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid in the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world" 1 John 4:17
To understand the teachings about love, we must grasp a concept with the intelligence, the progressiveness. The love in us is not something that comes instantaneously, it develops slowly, through the small daily actions of life, the love of God is not the love of friendship (philia) nor is it the love of passion (eros), the love God is nourished by acts of mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) and righteousness (golden rule) towards our neighbor, when we are able to help others without expecting something in return, when we live the mercy for the mercy itself, thus the love of God grows in us. Examples of this teaching are the good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), and the father of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32), who do not think of doing the right thing for a profit but rather do it because it has to be done.
We can say then that the depth of the love of God (Agape) is the prize of living wisely, dedicating our lives to the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, stability), this is how God gives us the gift of love through the Holy Spirit: "God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit", Romans 5:5.
