What is the gift of knowledge in the bible
In the Letter to the Romans there is a statement: "The invisible of God has become perceptible through the knowledge of the created" 1 Rom 20 (Q 79 A9). That is, there are eternal truths and temporal truths.
Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologiae wrote: "the superior reason tries to consult the eternal" Q 79 A9, also affirms: "the inferior reason tries to consider and consult the temporal" Q 79 A9.
Thomas Aquinas makes a difference between the natural reason or inferior and superior also called gift of science or knowledge.
From there the expression in the scriptures: "Renew yourselves in the spirit of your mind", Ephesians 4:23 (Q79, A 13); also: "No one can see the Kingdom of God unless they are born again", John 3:3; as well: "He opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures", Luke 24:45
Reason and spiritual gift of knowledge are different concepts. The reason is the essence of man, man is defined as "rational animal", animal gifted with reason. Instead the Gift of knowledge is the same intelligence of God, is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The reason represents a state of deprivation. The opinion and ignorance are deprivations of the knowledge. A blind man and a mole are deprived of the sense of the sight in different ways. We say that a being is deprivate when it has not something that by its own nature it belongs.
The nature of man is the conformity to God, the nature of man is the adult life. In adult life we are participates of the gift of knowledge. Without this gift is impossible to understand the scriptures. The scriptures require the use of this gift. We need to discern between good and evil to choose what is good.
The concept of reason is a limitation of the intelligence, rationally lack of the guidance of God, or to say the eternal life. Through the gift of knowledge we can see the truth of the Scriptures, because the characteristics of this spiritual gift are "precision" and "accuracy". There is no error in the spiritual gift of knowledge.
Open the intelligence, open the thought is the grace who makes us participates God, through the constancy (gift of fear of the lord) in the good (gift of righteousness).
