Meaning and explanation of the spiritual gift of prophecy in the bible
The apostle Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians explains in what the spiritual gift of prophecy consists of: "But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church", 1 Corinthians 14:3-4.
Paul in this part of the letter describes the gift of prophecy as what arises from the sacred listening: listen (perceive with attention), meditate (with intuition and inspiration), respond with discernment.
In this aspect a prophet is a doctor of wisdom, that is, a person gifted by God to teach wisdom. A doctor of wisdom is not a doctor of the Law. A doctor of the Law is basically someone who studied the law of Moses in a rabbinate. The engineering is a science, what is the name of who knows about engineering?: Doctor of Engineering. Wisdom is a science, what is the name of the one who knows about wisdom? Doctor of wisdom, but here it is necessary to clarify something this "doctorate" is a grace, a gift from God, it's impossible to be a "doctor of wisdom" for the study, it is God who endow. A doctor of wisdom is a person full of the holy spirit.
There is also another meaning for the gift of prophecy:"prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers, but for believers", 1 Corinthians 14:22. That is to say when spiritual integrity or enlightenment (gnosis) is achieved through a life of piety; the contemplative life arises ("no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again", John 3: 3), this contemplative life is accompanied by other blessings: clairvoyance, longevity, happiness of heart. This set of blessings is what Jesus calls "eternal life" ("this is eternal life that they may know you the only true God", John 17: 3).
This is why the gift of prophecy not only includes "knowledge of wisdom" (wisdom inspired by the sacred listening), but also the revelation of future facts that are going to happen, or of facts that are hidden from the sight of people. Contemplative activity brings "clairvoyance", because contemplation, that is, the meditation focused on the divine attributes of God, opens "the third eye". A contemplative is an oracle. Thence the existence of ancient oracles such as Delphi and Siwa, where the fate of kings in wars was predicted. In ancient times, that is, the pagan world, this was what was called "consulting spirits."
There is an important and final reflection on the gift of prophecy in the Letter of the apostle Paul:"Since you are eager for gifts of the spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church".
