The letter to the Hebrews tells us about the power of the word of God, this word has the power to change people when they hear it, that is, they retain it, and live it, they practice it with constancy (gift of piety). The word of God is the same wisdom. To worship God is to worship wisdom, about the word the letter to the Hebrews teach:
"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it jugdes the toughts and attitudes of the hearts" Hebrews 4:12
The letter says that the word is "alive and active", that is, it is progressive, acumulative, bear fruit through constancy, we receive the holy spirit (gnosis in philosophy) meditating on the word.
The apostle Paul clarifies to us about the power of the word:
"Therefore, as long as the promise of entering his rest remains valid, let us be afraid! Otherwise some of you will fail to reach it." Hebrews 4:1
To fear, to be afraid, means to have devotion. Remember that the fear of God or gift of piety is constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, stability. The word can only be received with a spirit of piety. The rest of God is the same contemplative activity, the contemplative life is the highest prize for those who live and hear the word of God, the angels are created for the contemplation of God.
The apostle adds that the word "it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit", wisdom has only two options: it can be accepted or rejected, there are no intermediate options, wisdom or the word of god is like a field with a hidden treasure, when we find this treasure we enter into the rest of God.
The word finally "judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart," is because it is from there that good and bad intentions come out, it is there that sin and mercy are conceived.
Finally remember what the apostle John tells us about the word:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome." John 1:1-5
