Spiritual Determination: How then could I do such a wiked thing and sin against God? Genesis 39:9
The Holy Scriptures, when they tell us about the life of Joseph in the book of Genesis, teach us what living in spiritual communion with God consists of. Life in the grace of God is not simply not sinning, it is living wisely, knowing how to discern right from wrong, and being prepared for everything in life, being good does not mean that bad things do not happen to you: "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens" Ecclesiastes 3:1.
Joseph had been sold into slavery in Egypt and sold to a man named Potiphar, who was a high-ranking official in the government of his country. And Potiphar, that Joseph was good at work, and that all his works prospered, he appointed him steward of his house, the book of Genesis tells us.
But it is here that the problems came, that's how the bible tells the story: "Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, ´Come to bed with me!´ But he refused. ´With me in charge,´ he told her, ´my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?´ And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to be with her or even be with her." Genesis 39:6-10
Joseph was a person who knew what spiritual determination was, and refused to sin against his master. But then Potiphar's wife stole some clothes from Joseph, and accused him in front of her husband of rape, with which Potiphar sent Joseph to jail. Joseph despite having done the right thing ends up in jail, Joseph did a good thing and received a bad one, but this is something for which a person in the grace of God is prepared. And this is the spiritual gift of patience, knowing how to tolerate evil when it occurs.
