Emulate Aristotle tells us in his book Rhetoric is to imitate capturing the spirit, the personality of the imitated.
The emulation is the opposite of the underestimation, the great personalities are emulated. The emulation is a higher instance than imitation, imitate is to replicate a conduct, to emulate is to imitate with the desire to match.
But what is to emulate God?
Emulate God is to solve what is presented to our judgement as God in person. Emulate God is to solve with the spiritual gift of Council, with exact justice: listen, meditate with intuition and inspiration, decide creatively. With the council we reach the adulthood and the conformity to God.
The Art of Listening or Gift of Counsel has two characteristics: precision and accuracy, the counsel search the truth, the consequence of this is that the justice is a form of error, like the sin, it is from this that the concept of heresy arises, that is, the teaching of the error.
Practical  cases of the Art of listening or sacred listening are: "Let anyone of you who is without sin be the firs to throw a stone" John 8: 7, "Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's" Matthew 22:21.
The Law of Return acts in all of our actions, we rip what we sow. The spiritual gifts return blessings. If we want perfect things we have to do things perfect. When we emulate God we receive in return the greatest blessing, the eternal life.
The Eternal life are blessings that God gives in advance of the life in glory. Such blessings are longevity, contemplation and happiness of heart. Eternal life is the most perfect blessing. True happiness, good love and peace are included in it.
The expression: "Blessed are those who emulate God for they shall inherit the eternal life", has the same structure as the Beatitudes taught by Jesus in the Sermon of the Mount, Matthew 5 and Luke 6, this is so because the divine laws, the charity and The law of return governs the perfections of God. In other words, God establishes the laws to govern the creation and these laws govern his perfections or gifts. Ensuring blessings for the blessed and curses for those who follow the error. This is the highest  approach of man in ethical and spiritual terms , the understanding, if we can speak about this, of God's plan.
